BACKGROUND: The maintenance of marginal bone integrity around dental implants continues to be a clinical challenge. It is still unclear whether loading multiple implant-supported prostheses that have different implant connections influences bone resorption. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare stress distribution around residual edentulous ridges supported by external hexagon (EH) and Morse taper (MT) implants with screw-retained frameworks obtained with the use of different methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three-element implant-supported prostheses with distal cantilevers were manufactured according to different techniques of obtaining the framework: LAS - framework sectioned and welded with a laser; TIG - framework sectioned and welded with tungsten inert gas (TIG); and CCS - framework obtained using a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. Occlusal and punctual loading (150 N) was applied to the cantilevers. In the photoelastic stress analysis, the fringe orders (n) were quanitified using the Tardy method, which calculates the maximum shear stress value (τ) at each selected point. RESULTS: High stress around the implants and tightening were observed in the TIG group, mainly in the crestal bone region for the EH and MT implant connections. The LAS and CCS frameworks exhibited lower stress for the MT connection under occlusal and punctual loading. CONCLUSIONS: The comparative analysis of the models showed that the MT connection type associated with the laser-welded or CAD/CAM frameworks resulted in lower stress values in the crestal bone area, suggesting the preservation of bone tissue in this region.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the vertical misfit, stress distribution around dental implants, and cantilever fracture strength of 3-unit implant-supported cantilever fixed partial dentures (FPDs) using frameworks made from different materials and manufacturing techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty FPDs were fabricated and divided into 5 groups (n = 8) based on the framework material used: LAS Co-Cr (Conventional casting-laser welding); TIG Co-Cr (Conventional casting -TIG welding); OP Co-Cr (Conventional casting-one-piece); CAD Co-Cr (CAD-CAM); and CAD Zr (CAD-CAM ZrO2 ). The vertical misfit was evaluated before porcelain application (T1) and before (T2), and after thermomechanical cycling (T3) by stereomicroscopy. Cantilever fracture strength was tested with a 50 kN (5000 kgf) load cell at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Qualitative and quantitative photoelastic analysis was performed to evaluate stress distribution at seven specific points in five FPDs (n = 1/group) subjected to occlusal loading. RESULTS: Only the molar showed interaction among the three factors (G × S × T; F(20.932) = 1.630; p = 0.044). Thermomechanical cycling (T2 vs. T3) had a significant effect on intra-group vertical misfit in molar, especially in LAS Co-Cr (Δ = 5.87; p = 0.018) and OP Co-Cr (Δ = 5.39; p = 0.007), with no significant effect in premolar (p > 0.05). Ceramic application combined with thermomechanical cycling (T1 vs. T3) caused a significant intra-group increase in vertical misfit in all groups, both in the molar and premolar (p < 0.05). OP Co-Cr was associated with greater vertical misfit and stress concentration. Frameworks manufactured by the CAD-CAM system exhibited lower vertical misfit and better stress distribution. FPDs with metal frameworks (>410.83 ± 72.26 N) showed significantly higher fracture strength (p < 0.05) than zirconia (277.47 ± 39.10 N), and the first signs of ceramic veneering fracture were observed around 900 N. CONCLUSIONS: FPDs with frameworks manufactured using a CAD-CAM system appear to be associated with lower vertical misfit and better stress distribution, although the section of the frameworks followed by welding may be a viable alternative. In addition, metal frameworks exhibit high fracture strength.

This study compared the effect of using milled fiber-reinforced resin composite and Co-Cr (milled wax and lost-wax technique) frameworks for 4-unit implant-supported partial fixed dental prostheses; and also, evaluated the influence of the connector's cross-sectional geometries on the mechanical behavior. Three groups of milled fiber-reinforced resin composite (TRINIA) for 4-unit implant-supported frameworks (n = 10) with three connectors geometries (round, square, or trapezoid), and three groups of Co-Cr alloy frameworks manufactured by milled wax/lost wax and casting technique, were analyzed. The marginal adaptation was measured before cementation using an optical microscope. Then, the samples were cemented, thermomechanical cycled (load of 100 N/2 Hz, 106 cycles; 5, 37, and 55 ᵒC, a total of 926 cycles at each one), and cementation and flexure strength (maximum force) analyzed. Analysis of stress distribution in framework veneered considering resin and ceramic properties for fiber-reinforced and Co-Cr frameworks, respectively, implant, and bone was by finite element analysis under three contact points (100 N) on the central region. ANOVA and Multiple paired test-t with Bonferroni adjustment (α = 0.05) were used for data analysis. Fiber-reinforced frameworks showed better vertical adaptation (mean ranged from 26.24 to 81.48 µm) compared to the Co-Cr frameworks (mean ranged from 64.11 to 98.12 µm), contrary to horizontal adaptation (respectively, means ranged from 281.94 to 305.38 µm; and from 150.70 to 174.82 µm). There were no failures during the thermomechanical test. Cementation strength showed three times higher for Co-Cr compared to fiber-reinforced framework, as well as flexural strength (P < .001). Regarding stress distribution, fiber-reinforced had a pattern of concentration in the implant-abutment complex. There were no significant differences in stress values or changes observed among the different connector geometries or framework materials. Trapezoid connector geometry had a worse performance for marginal adaptation, cementation (fiber-reinforced 132.41 N; Co-Cr 255.68 N) and flexural strength (fiber-reinforced 222.57 N; Co-Cr 614.27 N). Although the fiber-reinforced framework showed lower cementation and flexural strength, considering the stress distribution values and absence of failures in the thermomechanical cycling test, it can be considered for use as a framework for 4-unit implant-supported partial fixed dental prostheses in the posterior mandible. Besides, results suggest that trapezoid connectors mechanical behavior did not perform well compared to round or square geometries.

Mangrove ecosystems are among the most economically and ecologically valuable marine environments in the world. Mangroves are effective at long-term carbon storage within their sediments and are estimated to hold 12 billion metric tons of carbon worldwide. These ecosystems are therefore vitally important for carbon sequestration and, by extension, climate change mitigation. As part of the Paris Agreement, participating countries agree to provide plans to reduce their carbon emissions, or nationally determined contributions (NDCs). However, despite mangroves being recognized as important nature-based solutions, many countries still lack national data on carbon stocks and must use global or regional averages, which may not be sufficiently accurate. Here, we present the national carbon stock estimate of mangrove ecosystems for the NDC of Belize, acquired through a collaborative approach involving government agencies and NGOs. We conducted a comprehensive sampling of mangroves across the country, including a range of mangrove ecotypes. The mean total ecosystem carbon stock (TECS) for the nation was 444.1 ± 21.0 Mg C ha-1, with 74.4 ± 6.2 Mg C ha-1 in biomass stocks, and 369.7 ± 17.7 Mg C ha-1 in sediment stocks. Combining these data with a recent mapping effort, we provide the first national comprehensive mangrove carbon stock estimate of 25.7 Tg C. The national mean from this study varies from previous global analyses, which can under- or overestimate TECS by as much as 0.6 Tg C and 16.5 Tg C, respectively, depending on the study. These data supported the NDC update of Belize, and can be used to inform the country's mangrove protection and restoration commitments. The collaborative approach of this work should serve as a blueprint for other countries seeking to conserve natural blue carbon sinks as a strategy to achieve their climate targets.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of traditional and conservative endodontic access hole preparation on fracture resistance of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) lithium disilicate maxillary right central incisor crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven milled lithium disilicate maxillary right central incisor crowns were designed and fabricated with a chairside CAD-CAM system (Planmeca Romexis, Planmeca). The abutment preparation had a 1.0 mm incisal reduction and 1.0 mm chamfer finish. The restorations were bonded with resin cement to printed resin dies (n = 19 per group) and were treated and divided into three groups, (1) no endodontic access, (2) traditional triangular endodontic access, and (3) conservative ovoidal endodontic access. The endodontic access of the crowns was sealed with flowable resin composite. Restorations were subjected to 10,000 cycles of thermal cycling between 5° and 55°C. Then, restorations were loaded and exposed to compressive loading force, and the crack initiation (CI) and complete fracture (CF) were recorded. SEM micrographs of broken specimens on the printed dies were captured. ANOVA test and Bonferroni's correction were used for statistical comparison. RESULTS: The fracture resistance among the three groups varied. Crowns with no endodontic access displayed significantly (p < 0.001) higher resistance [CI: 1025 (121) N; CF 1134 (127) N], followed by crowns with conservative ovoidal endodontic access [CI: 924 (60) N; CF: 1000 (72) N. Crowns with traditional triangular endodontic access showed the significantly (p < 0.001) lowest fracture resistance [CI: 635 (82) N; CF: 709 (75) N]. CONCLUSION: The fracture resistance of chairside CAD-CAM lithium disilicate maxillary anterior crowns is influenced by the type of endodontic access provided. Conservative ovoidal endodontic access provides crowns with higher fracture resistance than traditional triangular endodontic access. Crowns with no endodontic access provided the highest resistance than other types of endodontic access.

This study evaluated the vertical misfit, passivity, and stress distribution after tightening the screws of different prosthesis. The vertical misfit (both screws tightened) of the G2 (24 µm) and G3 (27 µm) were significantly higher than G4 (10 µm) (p = 0,006). The passive fit (for the non-tightened) of the G1(64 µm) and G3 (61 µm) were significantly higher than the G4 (32 µm) (p=0,009). G1 showed high stress between the implants in the photoelastic analysis and G4 presented lower stress. In conclusion, CAD/CAM method results in less vertical misfit, more passivity, and consequently better stress distribution to the bone.

Resumo Neste estudo foi avaliado desajuste vertical, a passividade e a distribuição de tensões após o aperto dos parafusos de diferentes próteses. Dois implantes foram usados ​​para simular a reabilitação do espaço edêntulo da mandíbula do segundo pré-molar ao segundo molar. Quarenta próteses dentárias fixas parafusadas de três elementos com cantilever distal foram confeccionadas e separadas em quatro grupos de acordo com o método de obtenção da infraestrutura (n = 10): G1 = fundição convencional estrutura monobloco, G2 = fundição convencional seccionada e soldagem a laser, G3 = fundição convencional seccionada e soldagem com gás inerte de tungstênio (TIG) e G4 = infraestrutura obtida pelo sistema CAD / CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing). Os desajustes verticais com ambos os parafusos apertados e os desajustes relativos à avaliação de passividade com um parafuso apertado foram medidos com microscópio comparador óptico. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste de Shapiro-Wilk para comparação com ANOVA seguida de ajuste de Tukey com Bonferroni (α = 0,05). A análise qualitativa da distribuição de tensões foi realizada pelo método fotoelástico. G2 (24 μm) e G3 (27 μm) apresentaram valores significativamente maiores que G4 (10 μm) (p = 0,006) de desajuste vertical (ambos os parafusos apertados). Os valores de desajustes nos G1 (64 μm) e G3 (61 μm), do lado não apertado, foram significativamente maiores que no G4 (32 μm) (p = 0,009). G1 apresentou maior tensão entre os implantes na análise fotoelástica e G4 apresentou menor tensão. O método CAD/CAM resultou em menor desajuste, maior passividade e melhor distribuição de tensões no osso.

PURPOSE: This study used digital image correlation (DIC) to evaluate the strain transferred by splinted and non-splinted screw-retained fixed partial dentures (FPDs) supported by short and conventional implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four polyurethane models were fabricated to simulate half of the mandibular arch with acrylic resin replicas of the first premolar. Short (5 mm) and/or conventional (11 mm) implants replaced the second premolar and the first and second molars. Groups were: G1, two conventional (second premolar and first molar) and one short (second molar) implant; G2, one conventional (second premolar) and two short (first and second molar) implants; G3, three short implants; and G4, three conventional implants. Splinted (S) and non-splinted (NS) FPDs were screwed to the implant abutments. Occlusal load and a single point load on the second premolar, both of 250 N, were applied. Strain in the horizontal direction (Ɛxx) was calculated and compared using the DIC software. RESULTS: Splinted crowns presented the highest strain magnitudes of all tested groups (p < 0.05). The strain was concentrated near the short implants and presented a higher magnitude compared to conventional implants, especially in G2S (-560.13 µS), G3S (-372.97 µS), and G4S (-356.67 µS). CONCLUSIONS: Splinted crowns presented a higher strain concentration around the implants, particularly near the implant replacing the first molar. A combination of short and conventional implants seems to be a viable alternative for the rehabilitation of the posterior edentulous mandible with reduced bone height.

Distribuição espacial de Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera, Aphididae) e Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biótipo B (Hemiptera, Aleyrodidae) em algodoeiro Bt e não-Bt. O estudo da distribuição espacial de adultos de Bemisia tabaci e de Aphis gossypii nas culturas do algodoeiro Bt e não-Bt é fundamental para a otimização de técnicas de amostragens, além de revelar diferenças de comportamento de espécies não-alvo dessa tecnologia Bt entre as duas cultivares. Nesse sentido, o experimento buscou investigar o padrão da distribuição espacial dessas espécies de insetos no algodoeiro convencional não-Bt e no cultivar Bt. As avaliações ocorreram em dois campos de 5.000 m² cada, nos quais se realizou 14 avaliações com contagem de adultos da mosca-branca e colônias de pulgões. Foram calculados os índices de agregação (razão variância/média, índice de Morisita e Expoente k da Distribuição Binomial Negativa) e realizados os testes ajustes das classes numéricas de indivíduos encontradas e esperadas às distribuições teóricas de freqüência (Poisson, Binomial Negativa e Binomial Positiva). Todas as análises mostraram que, em ambas as cultivares, a distribuição espacial de B. tabaci ajustou-se a distribuição binomial negativa durante todo o período analisado, indicando que a cultivar transgênica não influenciou o padrão de distribuição agregada desse inseto. Já com relação às análises para A. gossypii, os índices de agregação apontaram distribuição agregada nas duas cultivares, mas as distribuições de freqüência permitiram concluir a ocorrência de distribuição agregada apenas no algodoeiro convencional, pois não houve nenhum ajuste para os dados na cultivar Bt. Isso indica que o algodão Bt alterou o padrão normal de dispersão dos pulgões no cultivo.


The study of spatial distribution of the adults of Bemisia tabaci and the colonies of Aphis gossypii on Bt and non-Bt cotton crop is fundamental for improving the sampling techniques and revealing differences in the behavior of non-target species between both cultivars. So, this experiment aimed to investigate the spatial distribution pattern of those species on the conventional non-Bt cotton crop, compared to the Bt cultivar. The samplings took place in two areas of 5.000 m² each, where it was done 14 evaluations counting adults of white-flies and colonies of aphids. The aggregation indexes (variance/mean rate, index of Morisita and Exponent k of the Negative Binomial Distribution) were calculated and accomplished the fitness tests of the individuals' numeric classes found and expected to the theoretical distributions of frequency (Poisson, Negative Binomial and Positive Binomial). Those analyses showed that in both cultivars, the spatial distribution of B. tabaci fitted to negative binomial distribution throughout the study period, indicating that the transgenic cultivar did not influence the pattern of aggregate distribution of this insect. With respect to the analysis for A. gossypii, the aggregation indexes showed aggregated distribution in both cultivars, but the distributions of frequency pointed to the occurrence of aggregate distribution only on conventional cotton, since there was no adjustment to the data on Bt crop. This indicates that Bt cotton has altered the aphids normal pattern of dispersion in the crop.

RESUMO

Between 2000 and 2004, a survey of Triatominae fauna (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and examination of natural infection caused by Trypanosomatidae in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, was conducted. A total of 13,671 specimens were collected. Through fauna analysis on the insects that were caught, Triatoma sordida was characterized as very abundant, very frequent, constant and dominant. The rates of natural infection with Trypanosoma cruzi were 3.2% for Panstrongylus geniculatus, 0.6% for Rhodnius neglectus and 0.1% for Triatoma sordida. Nevertheless, the State of Mato Grosso do Sul is free from endemic vector transmission.

Entre 2000 a 2004, foi realizado levantamento da fauna de Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) e exame de infecção natural por Trypanosomatidae, no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Um total de 13.671 espécimes foram capturados. Na análise faunística das espécies capturadas, Triatoma sordida foi caracterizada como muito abundante, muito freqüente, constante e dominante. Os índices de infecção natural para Trypanosoma cruzi apresentaram os valores de 3,2 por cento para Panstrongylus geniculatus, 0,6 por cento para Rhodnius neglectus e 0,1 por cento para Triatoma sordida, apesar do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul apresentar-se livre da transmissão vetorial endêmica.

RESUMO

The first occurrence of Panstrongylus guentheri Berg in Brazil is presented. This species had been reported only in the territories of Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay. We have extended the geographic distribution of this Triatominae, with two specimens captured in Bodoquena and Itaporã cities, both in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. These specimens were found in the intradomestic environment.

RESUMO

Relata-se a primeira ocorrência de Panstrongylus guentheri Berg no Brasil. Essa espécie, até então, havia sido observada somente na Argentina, Paraguai, Bolívia e Uruguai. Desta feita, amplia-se a distribuição geográfica desse Triatominae por meio de dois exemplares capturados nos municípios de Bodoquena e Itaporã, ambos no Mato Grosso do Sul. Esses exemplares estavam em ambiente intradomiciliar.

We have extended the geographic distribution of this Triatominae, with two specimens captured in Bodoquena and Itaporã cities, both in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. These specimens were found in the intradomestic environment.

The use of herbicides is a common and intensive practice in no tillage systems. The herbicides can influence, directly or indirectly, the population of edaphic arthropods. Collembola is a group that functions as a bio-indicator of soil conditions. The degree of abundance and diversity of Collembola provides the level of soil disturbance provoked by agricultural practices. This experiment was designed to compare the influence of herbicides on the population fluctuation of Collembola in a no-till soil preparation system. The work was conducted in a non irrigated no-till area at the Núcleo Experimental de Ciências Agrárias of the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Campus de Dourados, in soil planted with corn as a surface covering, during the period of December, 2002 to December, 2003. The data were analyzed according to a completely randomized model, in a split plot design. The plots received four types of herbicides: glyphosate, atrazine, 2,4-D and nicosulfuron. A fifth plot did not receive any herbicide (control), for a total of five treatment types. The sub plots were represented by their collection times (10, 20, 30 and 40 days after the herbicide applications). Both the type of herbicide and the time of data sampling influenced the Collembola population fluctuaction. The treatments with atrazine and 2,4-D caused the most reduction of the population of Collembola, depending on the time of application.

No plantio direto o uso de herbicidas é uma prática comum e intensiva, que influencia direta ou indiretamente a população de artrópodes da mesofauna edáfica. O grau de abundância e diversidade de Collembola comumente é indicado para comprovar a extensão de distúrbios de várias práticas agrícolas, pois esse grupo serve como bioindicador das condições do solo. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo comparar a influência de alguns herbicidas na flutuação populacional de Collembola, em solo sob o sistema de plantio direto. O trabalho foi realizado em uma área de plantio direto de sequeiro, do Núcleo Experimental de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Campus de Dourados, em latossolo roxo distroférrico com cobertura de milho, durante os meses de outubro de 2002 a janeiro de 2003. Os dados obtidos foram analisados segundo o modelo inteiramente casualizado constituído de tratamentos dispostos no esquema de parcelas subdivididas, onde as parcelas são representadas por uma testemunha mais quatro herbicidas: glifosate, atrazina, 2,4-D e nicosulfuron (totalizando cinco tratamentos) e as subparcelas pelas épocas de cada coleta (10, 20, 30 e 40 dias após aplicação dos herbicidas). Tanto os herbicidas testados quanto as épocas de coleta influenciaram a população de Collembola. Dependente do período de degradação dos herbicidas no solo, os tratamentos com 2,4-D, Atrazina, foram os que mais influenciaram a abundância de Collembola reduzindo sua população.

The influence of temperature on lifetime attributes of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley and Trichogrammatoidea annulata De Santis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was evaluated at four constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, and 30º C), RH 70 ± 10 percent, photophase 14 h. Anagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs were used as hosts. Developmental times of both parasitoid species were similar when exposed to 20, 25, or 30º C. T. annulata, however, developed slightly faster than T. pretiosum at 15º C. Emergence rates of both species were above 89 percent. The temperature threshold for T. pretiosum and T. annulata was 11º C and the number of degree-days required for their development was 126.9 and 122.3, respectively. Parasitization was maximal at 25º C. T. annulata, however, parasitized significantly more hosts than T. pretiosum in the entire temperature range. Temperature had no effect in brood size.T. annulata progeny consisted predominantly of males, except at 15º C, whereas in T.pretiosumitconsisted predominantly of females, except at 30º C. Parental females lived longer than males
